HL Deb 30 October 1990 vol 522 cc1836-7WA
Lord Monkswell

asked Her Majesty's Government:

For how long they intend Operation Container to continue.

The Minister of State, Home Office (Earl Ferrers)

Every effort is being made to resolve the industrial relations difficulties which have prolonged the use of police cells in various parts of the country following the loss of accommodation at H.M. Prison, Manchester. At present, it is not possible to say how long this arrangement, Operation Container will continue but I share the desire of the police authority and the Chief Constable of Greater Manchester, who operates it, to discontinue it as soon as possible.
