HC Deb 23 October 1990 vol 178 c156W
27. Mr. Grocott

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what recent developments there have been in the city technology college programme; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Fallon

The CTC programme is making substantial progress. Four colleges opened last month bringing the total of operational colleges to seven. Seven more are planned to open in 1991. My right hon. Friend has this month initiated consultation on proposals from the Wolfson Foundation and Cable and Wireless plc for a further college to serve the city of Bristol. If established the Bristol CTC will open in 1992.

55. Mrs. Maureen Hicks

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what interest has been expressed by parents in the establishment of city technology colleges.

Mr. Fallon

Parents are expressing their confidence in the city technology college programme by seeking places for their children in overwhelming numbers. All the colleges which are open have been oversubscribed in applications for places, both in initial and in subsequent years.
