To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will call for a report from the Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis as to what permission has been sought by the company fraud department to interview Arthur Scargill, president of the National Union of Mineworkers.

No. The police do not require permission to conduct interviews during the course of their inquiries.

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will call for a report from the Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis as to his most up-to-date estimate of the likely completion date of the company fraud department, Metropolitan police, inquiries into the activities of Arthur Scargill, president of the National Union of Mineworkers.

I understand from the Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis that the Metropolitan police expect their initial inquiries into the allegations against members of the NUM to be completed shortly.
