21. Mr. Steinberg

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what further action he proposes to take regarding local management of schools; and if he will make a statement.

I refer the hon. Member to the reply that I gave earlier today to my hon. Friend the Member for Nottingham, South (Mr. Brandon-Bravo).

34. Mr. Beith

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what representations he has received about local financial management of schools.

Mrs. Rumbold

My right hon. Friend has received a number of representations from local education authorities and others. Many of these welcome the opportunities which delegated budgeting brings to governing bodies and headteachers.

Mr. Flannery

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what proposals he has to introduce flexibility for schemes for the local management of schools.

I refer the hon. Member to the reply that I gave earlier today to the hon. Member for Carlisle (Mr. Martlew).

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will make a statement on the evidence from the pilot schemes which have been in operation for the local management of schools.

Mrs. Rumbold

The evidence from pilot schemes is that governors and headteachers have experienced considerable benefits from delegated budgets and local decision making.

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what action he proposes to take regarding local management of schools; and if he will make a statement.
