Mr. Martyn Jones

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many compensation claims have been received in relation to the Firearms Amendment Act 1998; how many of these claims have been(a) paid, (b) refused and (c) are still pending; and when such outstanding claims will be settled.

Mr. Peter Lloyd

A total of 2,906 claims have been received from applicants in England and Wales for payments under the Government buy-in scheme for weapons newly prohibited under the Firearms (Amendment) Act 1988. Of these claims, 2,727 have had payments authorised and 73 have been refused as ineligible under the scheme. A further 106 claims have yet to be determined. These will be resolved as soon as we are able to determine their eligibility.

Mr. Martyn Jones

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many firearms were handed into police stations under the Firearms (Amendment) Act 1988 bringing-in scheme since its commencement.

Mr. Peter Lloyd

A total of 2,906 applicants in England and Wales have submitted claims in respect of 3,607 weapons, surrendered to the police or otherwise disposed of, for a payment under the Government buy-in scheme. Separate figures on the number of weapons surrendered to the police and the number otherwise disposed of are not collected centrally.
