To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what was the growth in total investment and in total consumption during the 1980s.

Total fixed investment grew by 42 per cent. in volume terms between 1980 and 1988, the latest full year for which estimates are available. Over the same period, the volume of total domestic final consumption grew by 26 per cent.
