To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what proportion of total revenues emanates from(a) taxes on consumption and (b) taxes related to employment and wealth creation.

Mr. Lilley

In 1988, taxes on consumers' expenditure (net of subsidies) accounted for 30 per cent. of total taxes and national insurance contributions. There is no unambiguous definition of taxes related to employment and wealth creation.
