§ Mr. William RossTo ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what has been the loss of revenue to Northern Ireland railways as a result of terrorist activity in each of the last five calendar or financial years for which figures are available.
§ Mr. Peter Bottomley[holding answer 27 February 1990]: Northern Ireland Railways Co. Ltd. has informed me that because of the infrequency of incidents before 1989–90 no figures are available. The loss of revenue for 1989–90 is £581,000 to date. In addition to the security implications, there is a significant environmental impact, especially as the relative advantage of the rail service is reduced and more people switch to the road.
