§ Mrs. Virginia Bottomley"Achieving A Balance" is a 10-year plan for action which is monitored annually by a technical sub-group consisting of members of the profession, NHS management and the Department.
The most recent reports for the year 1988–89 show that regional health authorities are making steady progress in the implementation of the plan. Individual hospitals are not required to report directly to the Department on their progress.
Information is not held centrally on which hospitals have not yet met the recommendations made in the independent professional report "National Confidential Enquiry into Perioperative Deaths 1989," published June 1990.
