To ask the Secretary of State for Health what is the total number of accident and emergency units in England and Wales; how many accident and emergency units have closed in the last three years; and how many accident and emergency units are scheduled for closure by the end of 1990.

Mr. Dorrell

On 31 March 1989, the latest date for which figures are available, there were 511 national health service hospitals with accident and emergency departments in England. Information on the number of closures and proposed closures is not collected centrally.

Figures for Wales are a matter for my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Wales.
