HC Deb 26 July 1990 vol 177 cc418-9W
Mr. Alan W. Williams

To ask the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what was the total amount of all inward investment into Britain in the years 1987–88 and 1988–89; and if he will provide a breakdown of these figures, region by region.

Mr. Douglas Hogg

[holding answer 25 July 1990]: These figures are not readily available on a financial year basis. However, the table gives details of the number of inward investments decisions known to the Invest in Britain Bureau for the calendar years 1987 to 1989 and the associated jobs for the United Kingdom by region. Comparable information on the total level of financial investment by inward investors is not available.

The decision recorded include the establishment of a new business, expansion or acquisition of an existing business and involvement in joint venture. The figures are based on information provided by the companies themselves at the time of the investment and do not take into account subsequent developments.
