To ask the Secretary of State for Employment whether he will make a statement about the future of the careers and occupational information centre.

Mr. Howard

I want to ensure that COIC continues to provide its existing or a better level of service to its customers, including young people in schools and people with special needs, in the most efficient and cost-effective manner.

I have therefore decided to commission a feasibility study to consider the options for the future of COIC, including the options for transferring the centre to the private sector, to assess their financial and other implications and to make recommendations.

I shall consider the results of the feasibility study in the light of the results of my Department's internal review of careers guidance, which was announced on 10 May.
