§ Mr. John EvansTo ask the Secretary of State for Employment what steps have been taken by his Department to maximise the investment in the technical and vocational educational initiative spent on capital products.
Mr. JacksonThe aim of the technical and vocational education initiative (TVEI) is to prepare young people aged 24 to 18 for the demands of working life. Funds are used to provide additional teaching and other posts, INSET training, curriculum development, work experience, flexible learning methods etc, not simply capital equipment.
§ Mr. John EvansTo ask the Secretary of State for Employment if he will list in theOfficial Report the planned expenditure on technical and vocational education initiative in St. Helens in each of the next five years.
Mr. JacksonThe planned expenditure on TVEI in St. Helens in the financial year 1990–91 is £238,000. Future years' expenditure will depend upon resources available, although the Government are committed to spending £900 million over the period of TVEI extension and each authority will receive its full share over the life of its project.
