HL Deb 10 July 1990 vol 521 cc258-63WA
Lord Rea

asked Her Majesty's Government:

How many deaths and injuries have occurred among horse riders during each of the past 10 years, by age and sex.

Viscount Davidson

The Department of Transport's accident reporting system covers deaths and injuries on public roads. Riders of horses are not specifically identified, but included in a larger group covering all riders of non-motorised vehicles other than pedal cycles. Information relating to this category of road user on public roads is given in the table below. Road injury accident data are compiled by date of accident. The second table shows data collected by the registrar general on deaths to riders on animals. These are expected to consist of horse riders in almost all cases. No information on injuries is available from this source. Data are compiled by date of registration.

The information in this table is not restricted to accidents on public roads and also includes accidents not occurring on public roads. Industrial action by registration officers in 1981 means that the figures for this year are incomplete. Further information is available in the OPCS publication Mortality Statistics by Cause, England and Wales 1981.
