HC Deb 15 January 1990 vol 165 c15W
Mr. Kirkwood

To ask the Prime Minister to what extent the remuneration and conditions of service being offered to general practitioners in rural areas will improve primary care in those areas in future.

The Prime Minister

All the changes to the GPs' contract will benefit patients in rural areas. Doctors will be encouraged through their terms of service and remuneration system to raise standards and extend services. In particular more care will be available for the very young and elderly patients. There will be greater emphasis on health promotion and the prevention of disease for all patients. New services will include minor surgery and regular check-ups. Overall the family doctor services will be more responsive to the needs of patients.
