To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many staff have left the Metropolitan police forensic science laboratory, other than for normal retirement, in each year of the past 10 years.

Mr. Peter Lloyd

I understand from the Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis that since 1982 (the earliest year for which the information is available) the following staff of the Metropolitan police forensic science laboratory have left for reasons other than normal retirement, and, in the case of administrative staff, career transfer to other parts of the Metropolitan police:

Scientists Administrative staff

1986 8 411
1987 12 15
1988 12 9
1989 18 510
1990 1

Note:

The figures for scientists include those who have transferred to other Government Departments on promotion.

1 Includes one officer who died.

2 Includes one officer who retired on medical grounds and one who died.

3 Includes one officer who left at the end of a one-year contract.

4 Includes one officer whose employment was terminated.

5 Includes one officer who died.
