HC Deb 07 February 1990 vol 166 c640W
Mr. Allen

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many people pay income tax; and how many fill in income tax returns.

Mr. Lilley

It is estimated that about 21.4 million single people and married couples (25 million individuals) will be liable to income tax in 1989–90. These estimates are based on a projection of the 1987–88 survey of personal incomes and are provisional. Approximately 8 million income tax returns were sent out for the most recent year.
