To ask the Minister for the Arts what information he has on the number of repertory theatres currently facing financial deficits.

Mr. Luce

I understand that building-based drama companies operating outside London and funded by the Arts Council were projected to have an accumulated deficit of some £1.47 million by the end of March. This represents about 4.4 per cent. of their annual turnover and conceals a wide variation in the performance of individual companies.
