To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security what is his latest estimate for the total costs to the Exchequer of the average unemployed adult including payment of benefits, lost taxes and other taxes.

[holding answer 4 April 1990]: In 1989–90 the estimated average weekly benefit cost for unemployed people receiving benefit was £61.80. Estimates of tax revenue forgone are not available.
