HC Deb 04 April 1990 vol 170 cc704-5W
49. Mr. Bellingham

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs when he next plans to visit Taiwan; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Maude

My right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs has no plans to do so; in 1950 we ceased to recognise the nationalist authorities as the Government of China; since that date it has been our policy to have no formal dealings with the authorities in Taiwan.
