To ask the Secretary of State for Health if he will list those centres within the National Health Service which currently specialise in the treatment of retinal conditions.

All district health authorities have access to ophthalmology departments which treat retinal conditions, although some may have a particular interest in certain retinal conditions.

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what information he has concerning centres currently undertaking research into retinal conditions.

Mr. Freeman

The Department is currently funding research for the screening of diabetic patients for diabetic retinopathy at Oxford, Sheffield and Exeter. A report of this work will be submitted later this year.

We are aware that work in this area is also being funded by some medical research charities.
