HL Deb 24 July 1989 vol 510 c1290WA
Lord Graham of Edmonton

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What counselling facilities are available at Leeds Prison for attempted suicides; whether strip cells are used for attempted suicides; how long are prisoners held there; and how often were they used from January 1988 to date.

Earl Ferrers

All staff are encouraged to respond constructively to the problems of inmates, and particularly of those who may be suicidal; but the counselling roles of probation officers working at the prison and of prison chaplains and medical officers are particularly important.

Inmates who are thought to be at risk of suicide may be located in stripped cells or rooms for short periods at the discretion of the medical officer. Information on the number of occasions on which stripped cells or rooms are used on the direction of a medical officer is not available.
