HL Deb 24 July 1989 vol 510 cc1290-1WA
Lord Graham of Edmonton

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What plans they have for the future of Haverigg Prison; and what changes are currently being made or are being considered concerning the categories of prisoner accommodated in Haverigg Prison.

Earl Ferrers

In the short term, refurbishment and improvement work will be undertaken at H.M. Prison Haverigg with the aim of increasing the available accommodation from its present 313 places to around 350. Detailed plans for improving central facilities and services at the establishment are being drawn up, and some work is already in hand.

The present long-term planning assumption is that Haverigg will close around the year 2000 as the buildings reach the end of their useful life. We have no plans to change the arrangements under which only prisoners of Category C or below may be held at the prison.
