HL Deb 19 July 1989 vol 510 c902WA
Lord Kennet

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What environmental impact studies they have made of the short-, medium- and long-term effects of increased motor traffic as envisaged in their road building programme and as implied in the Prime Minister's welcome to an increase in car manufacture in this country.

Lord Brabazon of Tara

The environmental effect of each road scheme is assessed individually. The White PaperRoads for Prosperity sets out the environmental benefits of the Government's new road programme in the light of increased traffic. There is little obvious environmental benefit in buying more cars built in other countries rather than here. The department's commitment to the environment is set out in our booklet Transport and the Environment, which is available in the House Library.
