To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is his policy on educating European national school age children in British schools when their circumstances bring them to Britain for a period of time; and if he expects to change that policy in the light of 1992.

[holding answer 30 January 1989]: Under the Education Act 1944, local education authorities already have a duty to provide suitable and efficient primary and secondary education free of charge for all children in their areas. This duty applies equally to British children and to school-age children accompanying EC nationals and is not affected by the move to a single European market in 1992.
