To ask the Secretary of State for Employment how many applications have been made following the new incentives for loans under the loan guarantee scheme; and if he will make a statement.

The rate of applications under the loan guarantee scheme has almost doubled since 1987, to over 180 a month. This follows the introduction in January 1988 of simplified administrative procedures for loans up to £15,000 and the increase in the maximum guarantee for businesses in the 16 inner city task force areas from June 1988.

I have recently announced that the scheme is to be continued and that the maximum guaranteed loan will be increased from £75,000 to £100,000.
