HC Deb 15 February 1989 vol 147 cc238-9W
24. Mr. Ian Taylor

To ask the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster when he expects to meet the new European Community Commissioner responsible for competition policy.

Mr. Maude

I expect to see Sir Leon Brittan later this month.

59. Sir David Price

To ask the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster what advice he is offering the European Commission on developing its policies for dealing with monopoly and restraint of trade.

Mr. Maude

My Department is in regular contact with the European Commission on a range of matters concerning the development and implementation of EC competition policy. In common with other member states, the United Kingdom also has a formal role in advising the Commission on individual cases and policy proposals through the advisory committee on restrictive practices and dominant positions.

61. Mr. Butterfill

To ask the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster whether he has discussed the harmonisation of monopolies and mergers legislation with the responsible European Commissioner; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Maude

My right hon. and noble Friend the Secretary of State discussed competition policy issues with Commissioner Sir Leon Brittan on 30 January.
