§ Sir Michael McNair-WilsonTo ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department to what extent remission of prison sentences is based on the severity of the crime.
§ Mr. Douglas HoggRemission may be earned on all prison sentences of more than five days. Those not exceeding a total term of 12 months may be reduced by up to half; longer sentences may be reduced by a third. The maximum amount of remission will, thus, reflect the length of sentence or sentences imposed on a prisoner, which is determined by a number of other factors in addition to the severity of the offence.
