HL Deb 02 February 1989 vol 503 cc1307-8WA
Lord Graham of Edmonton

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether, in the light of direct representations from the football clubs concerned, or for any other reason, it is their intention to revise the statistics given by the Minister for Sport on 19th December 1988; and

Whether, in the light of direct representations from the football clubs concerned, or for any other reason, it is their intention to revise the accounts of "major incidents of hooliganism so far this season" given in a circular letter from the Minister for Sport on 21st December 1988, and recirculated by the Earl of Caithness in a letter dated 5th January 1989.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Department of the Environment (Lord Hesketh)

Reexamination of the statistics given by my honourable friend the Minister for Sport on 19th November in another place has revealed one transcription error made by the local police: the number of arrests at Leicester City Football club should be amended from 81 to 31. The revised total of arrests at League matches in the 1987–88 season is 6,097. The corrected entry for Leicester City in the table given in my honourable friend's reply is therefore:

Matches Total attendance Total arrests Average attendance per match Average arrests per match Arrests as a proportion of attendance (per cent.)
Leicester City
22 223,049 31 10,139 1.41 0.01

A revised version of the illustrative list of incidents of football hooliganism in 1988–89 annexed to the Minister for Sport's letter of 21st December 1988 and mine of 5th January was made available on publication of the Football Spectators Bill.
