To ask the Secretary of State For Transport what has been the increase in commercial road tonnage carried in the common market over the last five years; and if he will make a statement.

I refer the hon. Member to the publication "International comparisons of transport statistics 1970–1985; Part I intermodal". Table 8 gives data on freight lifted by mode.

Data for 1986 are published in table 6.6 of "Transport Statistics Great Britain 1977–1987." Both publications are issued by HMSO for the Government statistical service; copies are held in the Library.
