HC Deb 27 October 1988 vol 139 cc351-2W
18. Mr. Shersby

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is his estimate of the amount of money lent by the building societies for purposes other than house purchase, in the period since they were permited to do so by recent changes in regulations governing their activities.

Mr. Norman Lamont

So far this year, societies have advanced around £300 million in unsecured loans, representing less than 1 per cent. of their business.
