HC Deb 26 October 1988 vol 139 cc246-51W
Mrs. Dunwoody

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment if he will make it his policy to report regularly on the status of part-time workers in the statistics printed in theEmployment Gazette.

Mr. Lee

Part time workers are included in the employment statistics published in theEmployment Gazette.

In June 1988, the latest date for which figures are available, 25 per cent. of the workforce in employment in Great Britain (9 per cent. of males and 45 per cent. of females) were working part time.

The workforce in employment is the sum of employees in employment, the self employed, members of Her Majesty's Forces and participants in work-related Government training programmes. In classifying the workforce between full and part time all programme participants are counted as in part time employment.

Mr. William Powell

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment what is the estimated net change in the United Kingdom labour force for each year between 1989 and 2003.

Mr. Lee

The following information was published in an article in the March 1988 edition of theEmployment Gazette (pages 117–129), a copy of which is in the Library. The table includes projections of the net change in the Great Britain labour force for each year between 1987 and 1995. Projections beyond 1995, or for the United Kingdom, are not available.

The following information is in the Library. The table shows the parliamentary constituencies in Great Britain where the number of unemployed claimants has fallen by 40 per cent. or more between August 1984 and August 1988, together with the number of unemployed in each constituency at the requested dates. The figures are affected by the change in compilation of the count in March 1986 to reduce over recording.
