To ask the Secretary of State for Transport how many public transport projects have been financed by the private sector since 1979.

Mr. Portillo

Apart from the Channel tunnel approved in January 1986, major public transport projects involving private sector funding that have been implemented or approved in principle since 1979 include:

  • The Docklands light railway extension to Bank.
  • Greater Manchester metrolink.
  • The Heathrow to Paddington rail link.

There has also been a number of major improvements at British Rail and London Underground stations as part of redevelopment schemes.
