20. Mr. McAvoy

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what discussions he has had recently with the Government of the United States of America regarding the current situation in Chile.

Mr. Eggar

We have remained in regular and close contact with the United States Government about the political situation in Chile, in particular about the recent plebiscite. Both of us have welcomed the exemplary conduct of the polling and the Chilean Government's acceptance of the result.

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what discussions he had had recently with other Governments of the European Economic Community regarding the current situation in Chile.

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what discussions he has had recently with other governments of the EEC regarding the current situation in Chile.

We have remained in close and regular contact with our European Community partners on the political situation in Chile. The twelve member states issued a statement on 7 October on the outcome of the recent plebiscite. A copy has been placed in the Library of the House.
