To ask the Secretary of State for Defence if he will reassess the extent to which the ability to produce sufficient supplies of explosives and propellants in the United Kingdom in time of crisis has been affected by the sale of Royal Ordnance plc.

Mr. Sainsbury

The MOD reviews annually its future requirements for explosives, propellants and ammunition. Royal Ordnance has a five-year contract to supply a large portion of those requirements which runs until 1993. Any improvements in the efficiency of the factories involved will be of benefit in time of crisis as at other times.
