To ask the Secretary of State for Defence (1) whether the recent contract placed by his Department with the physics and space sciences and the University of Kent for research on a light gas gun facility for hyper-velocity impact studies is entirely funded by his Department; and if he will explain the relationship between that contract and the United States strategic defence initiative;

(2) what is (a) the total number of contracts placed with British universities for research in connection with the United States strategic defence initiative, (b) the total value of such contracts and (c) how many universities have signed such contracts.
