§ 9. Mr. WigleyTo ask the Secretary of State for Defence what is his estimate of the annual procurement costs within his Department; and what proportion of this is obtained from(a) Wales and (b) south-west England, respectively.
§ Mr. SainsburyThe defence estimate of total procurement expenditure for 1988–89 is £9,139 million. Of the Ministry's procurement expenditure in the United Kingdom on equipment in the financial year 1986–87 (the last year for which regional figures are available), 2 per cent. is estimated to have been spent in Wales and 13 per cent. in the south-west region of England.
These figures are based on the location of final suppliers to the Ministry of Defence. They do not take account of the different location of sub-contractors or of suppliers to the main contractors.
