§ Mrs. Ann TaylorTo ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what number and proportion of prisoners were(a) employed and (b) engaged in full-time education on the latest date for which figures are available.
§ Mr. Douglas HoggThe most recent figures available are for 1987 and are based on the average number of prisoners employed per weekday in male establishments. They are:
- (a) 25,330, which is just over half of the male population and
- (b) 6,490, which is approximately one seventh of the male population, and include those on training courses.
These figures should be regarded as approximate. There are no available figures for female establishments.
