Mr. Ralph Howell

To ask the Secretary of State for Health if he will state the amount of local authority spending, on average, on social services and the amount per head for 1960, 1970, 1979, 1984 and 1988.

The table gives the information requested for the financial years 1979–80 (outturn), 1984–85 (outturn) and 1988–89 (budgets). The figures are also shown in real terms adjusted by the GDP deflator (base 1987–88). Information for 1960 and 1970 is not available in a comparable form.
