To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether his Department has produced any estimate of the cost of surplus places in(a) primary and (b) secondary education; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Butcher

The premises-related costs of retaining a surplus primary and secondary place are estimated at £120 and £200 a year, respectively. There are additional but unquantified teaching costs.
