Mr. Chris Smith

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what was the cost to the Treasury of introducing relief for single donations to charities by companies in 1986–87, 1987–83 and for the first six months of 1988–89; and how much of the cost was attributable to such donations to professional arts organisations with charitable status in the same periods.

Mr. Norman Lamont

The cost accruing from single donations made in the periods specified are now estimated to be:

£ million
1986–87 12
1987–88 13
April-September 1988–89 23
1 Revised.
2 Provisional.

The cost attributable to donations to professional arts organisations is not known because many payments are made through intermediaries.
