To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many cells there are in(a) Her Majesty's prison Liverpool, Hornby road and (b) Risley remand centre.

The number of cells is as follows:

Prison Cells
Liverpool 840
Risley 542

These cells are certified to accommodate either one or two inmates. Both establishments also have non-cellular accommodation in hospital wards and other rooms.

On Wednesday 2 November 1988, 1,386 prisoners were held in Her Majesty's prison Liverpool and 723 prisoners were held in Her Majesty's remand centre, Risley.
