§ Mr. Menzies CampbellTo ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what arrangements are made for the recording of accidents to school children while engaged in sporting activities as part of the school curriculum.
§ Mr. ButcherSchools, as places of employment, are covered by the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and722W Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 1985 (RIDDOR) and are thereby required to provide the Health and Safety Executive with written details of specified major injuries sustained by pupils (as well as employees) for whose activities they are responsible within seven days of an accident occurring.
The regulations are made under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and are the responsibility of my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Employment.
§ Mr. Menzies CampbellTo ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what was the number of accidents occurring to school children while engaged in sporting activities as part of the school curriculum for the last five years for which information is available.
§ Mr. ButcherHealth and Safety Executive figures show that, in the 12 months from April 1986 to March 1987, one fatality and 4,576 major injuries occurred involving school children while engaged in supervised sporting activities, though not necessarily as part of the school curriculum. Most of the injuries were fractures. Figures for earlier years are not available.
