HC Deb 03 November 1988 vol 139 c722W
Mr. Menzies Campbell

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what provision is made for teaching first aid to schoolteachers who have the responsibility for supervising schoolchildren engaged in sporting activities as part of the school curriculum.

Mr. Butcher

My Department's criteria for courses of initial teacher training contain no specific requirement for training for the first aid of pupils who may be injured while taking part in school sports. Our long-standing advice to local education authorities is, however, that all teachers should have a basic working knowledge of first aid and that a proportion of the teaching staff in every school should hold a valid first-aid certificate following an approved course of training.
