HC Deb 02 November 1988 vol 139 cc663-4W
Mr. Nicholas Bennett

To ask the Attorney-General why the Public Record Office no longer provides photocopies of documents to postal inquirers.

The Attorney-General

The Public Record Office provides photocopies of documents in accordance with sections 2(4)(d) and 5(3) of the Public Records Act 1958. In the face of increasing demand, the office's search department places most emphasis on assisting visitors in person to the office and on work which benefits numbers of readers rather than individuals. It is therefore unable to undertake lengthy searches on behalf of postal inquirers, but it will identify documents for photocopying provided full references are supplied and no more than three items are involved. Where these conditions are not met, the inquirer is referred to the services of record agents, or advised to visit the Public Record Office.
