The Minister of State, Department of the Environment (The Earl of Caithness)
The results for England, Wales and Northern Ireland for the 1987 bathing season are set out below in summary form.
The 1987 results show that 262 out of 374 bathing waters in England, Wales and Northern Ireland—70 per cent.—were considered to meet the directive's mandatory bacteriological standards. This shows a significant improvement over 1986 when only 62 per cent. met these standards. The results have been calculated on the same basis in the two years, although a small number of additional waters were included in the 1987 survey.
These results are encouraging and show that good progress is being made in bringing all our identified bathing waters up to EC standards. This is being done through a major programme of capital spending to improve bathing water quality, mainly through the construction of long sea outfalls, and we are currently reviewing this programme with water authorities.
I shall arrange for a more detailed summary of the results to be placed in the Library. The results will also be sent to the Commission in accordance with Article 13 of the bathing water directive.
