Mr. Wigley

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment how many people took up offers under the enterprise allowance scheme during the past 12 months; and what plans he has for extending this scheme.

Mr. Cope

During the year April 1987 to March 1988, 106,305 people joined the scheme; 110,000 places will be available during the current year.

There are no plans at present to alter the main eligibility rules of the scheme.
