HC Deb 04 May 1988 vol 132 c467W
47. Mr. Sumberg

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement on Her Majesty's Government's recent initiative to improve relations with the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics.

Mr. Mellor

Anglo-Soviet relations are better than for many years, with an active high level dialogue. Fundamental differences between us remain but we are able to discuss these frankly and look for solutions wherever possible. We aim to secure progress in arms control and the settlement of regional conflicts; much greater respect for human rights; an increase in trade; and more contacts between peoples at all levels. We shall continue to work for further improvement in bilateral relations.

59. Mr. Soames

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what representations he has received about Her Majesty's Government's current relations with the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics.

Mr. Mellor

We regularly receive letters from right hon. and hon. Members and members of the public about Anglo-Soviet relations. The views we receive are reflected, where appropriate, in our dealings with the Soviet authorities, where we are seeking to improve relations further, including progress in Soviet respect for human rights, arms control measures and the settlement of regional conflicts.
