HC Deb 29 March 1988 vol 130 cc423-4W
44. Mr. Ken Hargreaves

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment if he will make a statement on the number of people employed in tourism and tourism-related industry in the county of Lancashire.

Mr. Lee

There were an estimated 37,000 employees in employment in tourism-related industries in the county of Lancashire in September 1984, the latest date for which information is available. This figure does not include the self-employed, for whom a comparable estimate is not available.

120. Mr. Atkinson

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment if he is satisfied with the workings of section 4 tourist grants; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Lee

A recent study by Department of Employment economists showed that the section 4 scheme has a significant effect in supporting local and regional employment, and makes a contribution to helping the tourism industry operate more efficiently and effectively. We continue to keep the scheme under review.

93. Mr. Brandon-Bravo

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment what information he has on the rate per week at which jobs are being created in the tourism sector.

Mr. Lee

No information is available on the rate per week at which jobs in the tourism sector are created. However, there has been a net increase of 43,000 in the estimated number of employees in employment in tourcism-related industries over the year to September 1987. These figures exclude the self-employed, for whom comparable estimates are not available.
