To ask the Secretary of State for Employment what has been the change in the number of specialist inspectors in the Health and Safety Executive since 1979.

Mr. Nicholls

On 1 April 1979 there were 224 specialist inspectors employed in the Health and Safety Executive. On 1 March 1988 there were 218.
